TRIO IMAGINATION
Trio Imagination represents a rare and resonant collaboration that bridges two generations of artistry, uniting the profound legacies of master musicians with the vision of a new voice. Trio Imagination is a creative evolution of the revered ensemble Trio 3, originally founded by saxophonist Oliver Lake, drummer Andrew Cyrille, and bassist Reggie Workman. Known for its uncompromising artistry and commitment to collective improvisation, Trio 3 became a cornerstone of avant-garde jazz, consistently pushing the boundaries of expression and collaboration.
Following Lake’s retirement, Cyrille and Workman—both towering figures in the history of jazz—have chosen to carry forward the spirit of the group with a renewed focus. To do so, they extended an invitation to pianist David Virelles, a visionary artist whose work bridges tradition and innovation with remarkable depth. Born in Cuba and shaped by a wide-ranging musical life, Virelles brings a distinct voice that draws from many musical root systems.
Trio Imagination honors the foundational ethos of Trio 3 while exploring new sonic territories. The group’s repertoire includes original compositions by each member, as well as creative spontaneous compositions. The result is a dynamic interplay of generations, perspectives, and cultural roots—an unfiltered dialogue that reflects both a deep historical consciousness and an unwavering commitment to music.
This performance at the Hyde Park Jazz Festival offers audiences a chance to witness a living lineage of improvisational artistry where memory, experimentation, and imagination converge on stage in real time.
