Luke Stewart's Exposure Quintet

Luke Stewart’s Exposure Quintet first came together in 2018 as part of Dave Rempis’ Exposure Series at Elastic Arts. The name is a direct reference to the experience of coming to Chicago and performing for the series with this group of heroes and legends.

The journeys of many in improvised music, including the musicians in this ensemble, illustrate the exploration of “composition” in true collective, non-hierarchical form. For example, there are no timbres, dynamics, or series of notes that are pre-conceived by an individual and then imposed upon the others. Rather, the music is allowed to be presented, with equal representation from all. The “composer,” in this way, is merely the organizer of the spirit energy of the ensemble. This is the nature of the beautiful offering that improvised music provides.

The musicians:

Ed Wilkerson, Jr. - reeds/oud

Ken Vandermark - reeds

Jim Baker - piano/electronics

Luke Stewart - bass

Avreeayl Ra - drums/percussion
