Julius Tucker

A pianist, composer, bandleader, and producer whose expansive artistry transcends genre boundaries, Julius Tucker is a pillar of Chicago’s jazz and creative music communities. With a career spanning over two decades, he has solidified his reputation for masterful keyboard fluency, harmonic sophistication, and a multifaceted voice that moves effortlessly between jazz, improvised music, and electronic experimentation.

Rooted in Chicago’s rich musical legacy, Tucker began his classical training at the Moody School of Music before refining his jazz sensibility at the Merit School of Music and Whitney Young Magnet High School. His academic journey culminated at Northwestern University, where he earned dual degrees in jazz piano and civil engineering—a testament to his disciplined creativity—and received the prestigious Luminarts Fellowship in Jazz Improvisation.

A seasoned performer on international stages, Tucker has played in legendary venues such as The Green Mill, The Jazz Showcase, Sam First, and Red Light Cafe, and appeared at festivals including the Chicago Jazz Festival, San Antonio’s Fiesta Jazz Fest, the Iowa City Jazz Festival, and Italy’s JazzIt Festival, collaborating with a host of international artists.

Whether they are intimate trios, genre-blurring electronic projects, or compositions for TV and film, Tucker’s productions and compositions reflect a deep engagement with jazz tradition and contemporary innovation.
