TRIO MOKILI play roots and jazz-inflected arrangements of music from across the African continent, spiraling into deep improvisations informed by other works. Guitarist Nathaniel Braddock is a well-known practitioner of African guitar styles, leading the Occidental Brothers Dance Band Int'l and Air Congo, and collaborating extensively with musicians from Mali, Ghana, Zambia, and Congo. Braddock is joined on drums by Makaya McCraven, known as a star of the new jazz and for his chart-topping records, Universal Beings and In the Moment. Bassist Junius Paul—known for his work with Makaya McCraven, Roscoe Mitchell, the Art Ensemble of Chicago, and Dee Alexander—brings profound groove and dazzling improvisational intuition to make this music a rootsy and riveting live experience, invoking both the golden age of African guitar music and the experimentation of the avant-garde.
