Sammy Miller & the Congregation

Saturday, September 24, 2:30-3:30pm

West Stage

SAMMY MILLER AND THE CONGREGATION describe themselves as being on  “a mission to put the generosity back into jazz and bring art back to the people.” They “play joyful jazz . . . [in] a style that entertains, enriches, but most of all uplifts.” A native of Los Angeles, Grammy-nominated drummer Sammy Miller has become known for his unique maturity and relentless focus on making music that “feels good” as a drummer, singer, and bandleader. Upon completing his Master’s degree at The Juilliard School, Sammy formed his ensemble, The Congregation. The band focuses on sharing the power of community through their music—joyful jazz. While, independently, the band members have performed and recorded with notable artists including Wynton Marsalis, Joshua Redman, Lee Fields, Jason Moran at venues from the White House to Lincoln Center and the Hollywood Bowl, The Congregation has opted to remain together to create globally conscious music that can “spread joy throughout the world,” including the Umbria Jazz Festival, Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola, and the Harlem Arts Festival. With SAMMY MILLER on drums, the CONGREGATION includes ALPHONSO HORNE, trumpet; BEN FLOCKS, tenor saxophone; PATRICK SARGENT, soprano sax; DAVID LINARD, piano; MOLLY MILLER, guitar; SAM CRITTENDEN, trombone; and JOHN SNOW, bass.
