RICHARD JOHNSON (SOLO)
Saturday, September 28, 3:30-4:30pm
RICHARD D. JOHNSON has cultivated a rich and pedigreed musical background, having studied at some of the most esteemed institutions of music, schooled with some of the most legendary jazz musicians, and performed with some of the field’s best. After completing his undergraduate degree at the Berklee School of Music in just two years, Johnson went on to receive a Master’s degree in Jazz Pedagogy from the Boston Conservatory, and then an Artist Performance Diploma at the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance at New England Conservatory. Subsequently, he has been invited to become a member of Wynton Marsalis' Septet and Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, to perform for the NBA, and to play as part of the Russell Malone Quartet, Delfeayo Marsalis Quintet, and The Bobby Watson Quartet. He has enjoyed the privilege of accompanying such jazz icons as Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock and Arturo Sandoval.
Johnson has also offered opportunities to others. He started the Reach Afar program for young people ages 7-17, to educate them about elements of jazz in hip-hop. As a representative of the U.S. through the State Department, he was named Musical Ambassador, which allowed him to complete six state department tours and perform in more than 76 countries. In 2007, he had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to run around the world—literally circle the planet on foot—for the Blue Planet foundation, as part of an initiative to create safe, clean, drinking water for people in need all over the world. More recently, he has become a Jazz Ambassador for Jazz at Lincoln Center. Here in Chicago, he serves as piano instructor for the Ravinia Jazz Program.
