Nick Mazzarella Quintet
Saturday, September 28, 4:15-5:15pm
The Nick Mazzarella Quintet was formed in 2013 and features some of the most active and versatile musicians working in Chicago’s vibrant jazz and improvised music scenes today. The project is dedicated to exploring the intersection between the blues and the avant-garde, through an extensive repertoire of Mazzarella’s original compositions and arrangements of classic material. The quintet maintains a monthly performance residency at the California Clipper, and has been featured at Constellation as part of the Chicago Jazz Institute’s Jazz Club Tour, and as a weekend act at the historic Green Mill.
Saxophonist and composer NICK MAZZARELLA has been described as "continuing the approach taken by like-minded trail-blazing altoists Eric Dolphy, Ornette Coleman, Henry Threadgill, Oliver Lake, and Gary Bartz” by “seeking to embody the history of the music while pushing it forward into new realms” (Troy Dostert, All About Jazz). He has performed and recorded with such artists as Tomeka Reid, Joshua Abrams, Hamid Drake, Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, Avreeayl Ra, Rob Mazurek, Geof Bradfield, Devin Hoff, and Makaya McCraven, and toured throughout the U.S. and Scandinavia, as well as in parts of Africa and the Middle East. In Chicago, Mazzarella has made unique and ongoing contributions to the city’s rich culture of jazz and improvised music not only through his continuous performance schedule, but also through his work as a concert series presenter.
