Interdisciplinary artist MIKEL PATRICK AVERY has been active within the Chicago area for twelve years. Established as a jazz drummer, he is recognized for his orchestral and melodic style of drumming, which often involves unconventional and "non-musical" objects. In addition to being a performing musician, Avery is also a dedicated composer, photographer, producer, and educator. In recent years, he has become an integral voice in various ensembles, including Rob Mazurek's Moon Cycles; Joshua Abrams' Natural Information Society; The Chicago Jazz Philharmonic; and Theaster Gates' Black Monks of Mississippi. He has also led several of his own projects, including 1/2 Size Piano Trio; Rats+Star; and Mikel Patrick Avery PLAY. Avery has had the privilege to perform at some of the world’s greatest outlets, including The Pritzker Pavilion at Millennium Park; Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles); Documenta 13 (Kassel, Germany); Kepler Studio (Berlin); Guelph Jazz Festival (Guelph, Canada); White Cube (London); MCA Chicago; and a performance for President Barack Obama.
Back Alley Jazz musicians include MIKEL PATRICK AVERY (drums); JOHN SUTTON (bass); ANTHONY BRUNO (tenor saxophone); and BEN LAMAR GAY (cornet).
