The award-winning students of KENWOOD ACADEMY JAZZ BAND form part of a vibrant landscape of musicians who represent a long-standing tradition of excellence. Kenwood Academy provides an open door for students who want to learn about jazz music in an environment that also offers the chance to develop life-long skills such as problem-solving, teamwork, organization, and presentation skills, through intensive musical training. The focus is on education, and the outcome is an artistic masterpiece. In addition to achieving outstanding contest ratings, some of the band’s students have been identified as among the best players in the nation.

The Jazz Band, led by GERALD POWELL and BETHANY PICKENS, has performed at the Chicago Jazz Festival with both Mwata Bowden and Nicole Mitchell, and was featured with MacArthur Awardee Jason Moran at Symphony Center in June 2014. They were also the focus of a Chicago Tribune series by Howard Reich and a 30-minute Chicago Tribune documentary film. Graduates of Kenwood include Mandy Patinkin, Joan Collaso, Maggie Brown, Bethany Pickens, Tammy McCann, DeMarre McGill, Marquis Hill, and Taylor Moore.
