Henry Johnson Quintet
Sunday, September 24
Guitarist HENRY JOHNSON’s music roots run deep into gospel, jazz, and blues. Born in Chicago, he spent time in his youth in Memphis playing gospel and R&B music before moving back to his hometown, where he began developing a reputation as a talented jazz musician. You’re the One, his debut album released in 1986, won a five-star rating from Downbeat magazine, was nominated for a Grammy, and was described in Diane Patrick’s JazzTimes review as “a thoughtful piece of work which may well become a jazz guitar classic.” Since then, Henry has recorded a number of other albums and has recorded and performed with luminaries such as Ramsey Lewis, Vanessa Ruben, Richie Cole, Nancy Wilson, and Dizzy Gillespie, among others. Performing with him are BILLY FOSTER on piano, MARK SONKSEN on bass, CHARLES HEATH on drums, and ERIC SCHNEIDER on saxophone.
