Described by Neil Tesser as “a potent hard-driving outfit that matches [a] throaty trombone with a beef-stew saxophonist and a fluent, octave-stretching trumpet ace BILL MCFARLAND & THE CHICAGO HORNS manage to create a big band sound with only six musicians. A one-time member of the hit group The Southside Movement, Bill McFarland received the designation “Master Trombonist of R&B, Funk, Jazz & Soul" from the Black American Blues Historical Society of Canada. Saxophonist HANK FORD has played with Aretha Franklin, Jerry Butler, and Curtis Mayfield as well as on "The Wiz" and Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Ladies" stage shows. He also performs with Jeff Lindberg’s Chicago Jazz Orchestra. Trumpeter Kenny Anderson has shown his versatility by performing with musicians from Luther Allison and Mighty Joe Young, to Chuchito Valdés and Malachi Thompson. He also has performed as a blues and rhythm & blues section man and held the first chair in salsa bands. His salsa and Latin connections include the Orchestra Isla, Hector Silveira Orchestra, and Chuchito Valdés. The online chicagojazz.com describes the Horns as having a “sound [that] is a cross between the Jazztet and the Jazz Messengers. Smooth as the former and energetic as the latter.” KIRK BROWN, piano; YOSEF BEN ISRAEL, bass; and BEN JOHNSON, drums complete the Chicago Horns.
