Saturday, September 24, 5:30-6:30pm
Born and reared in Puerto Rico, saxophonist and composer, ROY MCGRATH has been praised for his poise, musical maturity, tonal depth and sheen, revealing “solos of considerable complexity and communicative power.” His sound has been described as having “a deep, dark timbre burrowing into the low registers and an imploring but still warmly cushioned tone singing openly up top . . . a sound you could get lost in.” Roy received his Masters degree in Music from Northwestern University as a student of Victor Goines. His original album, Martha, dedicated to his grandmother, reveals a “musician of ample curiosity searching for original modes of expression.”
Completing Columbia College in 2009, composer, pianist, educator, BILL CESSNA has been part of Chicago’s jazz and salsa scenes. Since graduating in spring of 2013 he has been working as a chorale director, educator and performer playing with various Latin/Salsa, Blues, Electronic, and Jazz groups both as a sideman and bandleader. His teaching approach focuses on learning songs of all styles to enhance their technique, understanding of harmony, and improvisational skills while helping students set goals, develop good practice habits, and build confidence. He gives lessons in piano, guitar, drums, and voice.
