Orbert Davis trumpeter, workshop, and concert

Orbert Davis is a master trumpeter, conductor, composer, and educator who has worked with such greats as Wynton Marsalis, Kurt Elling and Stevie Wonder. He has also arranged music for and had cameo roles in The Babe, A League of Their Own, and Road to Perdition. Orbert performs with his group "Orbert Davis with Strings Attached," is co-founder and director of Music Alive!, and founder and conductor of the acclaimed Chicago Jazz Philharmonic. In 1995 the Chicago Tribune named him one of the Arts People of the Year, and in 2003 Chicago Magazine named him one of seven Chicagoans of the Year.
Travis Jackson lecturer on Music and Humanities
Travis Jackson is an ethnomusicologist and associate professor of music and the humanities at the University of Chicago. His work focuses on jazz, rock, and recording technology. He is author of the forthcoming book "Blowin' the Blues Away: Performance and Meaning on the New York Jazz Scene." He has a Ph.D. from Columbia University and has been teaching at the University of Chicago since 2003.
Muntu Dance Theatre ancient and contemporary African dance and music

The Muntu Dance Theatre group performs ancient, authentic, re-invented, contemporary and progressive forms of African dance. The Muntu Dancers bring the audiences out of their seats and encourage them to celebrate the “essence of humanity,” the meaning of Muntu in the Bantu language. The Muntu Dance Theatre is dedicated to careful research of the societies from which their dances originate, and believes educating their audiences is essential.
Charles “Rick” Heath drummer
Charles Heath has been drumming and winning awards since childhood. He has played with many jazz greats, and is now working with the Broadway musical "The Color Purple." He began professionally at the age of fourteen, attended Shaw University on a full music scholarship, and received his degree in music performance.
Jumaane Taylor tap dancer
Jumaane Taylor began dancing at the age of 7. He won first place in the First Annual All Chicago Tap Off, danced in the Chicago Human Rhythm Project, and has traveled all over the United States to perform. Jumaane currently teaches choreography and performs with M.A.D.D. Rhythms, founded by found by Bril Barrett and Martin Dumas III.

Bill McFarland and the Chicago Horns have played Chicago's top jazz clubs and the 16th Annual Chicago Jazz Festival. They are a critically acclaimed hard-hitting boisterous band playing in the big-band style of the 1960's. Bill has played with such greats as Aretha Franklin and Duke Ellington.
Reginald T. McCants keyboard
Reginald T. McCants is an unparalleled keyboard player with boundless enthusiasm. He is such an intense player that his band members say, "don't get on stage with him unless you're ready to play." He has a degree in commercial music from the University of Memphis, and is music director for the HBO show "Midnight Mac," featuring Bernie Mac.

Dee Alexander jazz vocalist

Dee Alexander is a treasure of talent. One of Chicago's most respected female vocalists/songwriters, she has shared her eclectic vocal stylings with venues all over the world. Dee has been featured on various commercial spots, including McDonald's, Pillsbury, Buick LeSabre, Dove, and Amoco. The Chicago Tribune labeled her improvisations "uncommonly inventive," and recently featured an article on her growing popularity and enduring talent.
Mwata Bowden musical performer
Mwata Bowden is director of jazz ensembles at the University of Chicago, and has performed at numerous jazz and blues festivals in the area and around the world. He has been playing since childhood, and was mentored by the great Captain Walter Dyett, who also trained Nat "King" Cole. Mwata was awarded the Outstanding Artist Service Award for his work with children through music and he serves on the board of directors of the Jazz Institute of Chicago. He also served as chairman of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians.
TOCA: Tony Carpenter - percussionist

Tony Carpenter is a percussionist who explores the traditional rhythms of West Africa, and has performed with many African dance troupes. Ari Brown grew up on the South Side of Chicago, and plays saxophone and keyboards. Brown is a member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. Tony has also played with many Masters Cogueros including, Mongo Santamaria, Armondo Peraza, Alex Acunna, and Giovanni Hidalgo.
Two For Brazil

Two For Brazil is comprised of Paulinho Garcia and Greg Fishman. They are an acoustic guitar/saxophone duo whose main influence is Brazilian music, though they are also known for their work in jazz. They play in Chicago clubs and to sold-out audiences in China, Hong Kong, Bangkok, and Japan. In 2001, they performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival and won "Best Jazz Entertainers 2003" at the Chicago Music Awards. Greg is the foremost expert on the music of Stan Getz, and is the author of three Getz transcription books for Hal Leonard.

Chicago Sax in the City is an all-saxophone band that has played with heavy hitters such as Barbara Streisand, Chaka Khan, BB King, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. The band is comprised of saxophone masters in their own right. Ray Silkman went from playing saxophone on the streets for survival to performing internationally; James Perkins has lent his talent on over 250 albums and thousands of jingles; Skinny Williams performed worldwide with Junior Wells and has done a McDonald's television commercial; and Audley Reid has traveled from Jamaica to Asia with his talents, proficient on all saxophones.

Richard Steele is a host for Public Affairs Programming on Chicago Public Radio. He has hosted popular shows on WBMX 102.7 and WVON 1450 AM, and became "The Real Steele" on WGRT (95 AM) AM, where he progressed to program director shortly after the station's transition to WJPC 95 AM. Richard is vice president and board member of the local American Federation of Television and Radio Artists and a board member of the Chicago Association of Black Journalists./p>

Willie Pickens is one of Chicago's jazz greats. As a pianist who has worked with the top names in the business, Willie is admired for his contributions to the world of jazz and music education. Beginning his career with Eddie Harris, Willie went on to work with notables such as Clark Terry, Elvin Jones, and Louie Bellson. He is a leader in the Hyde Park community and has spearheaded Jazz Christmas, the musical celebration his parish holds in December.

Maggie Brown studied at Columbia College and performs a one-woman show "LEGACY: Our Wealth of Music," about the history of African American music. In 1997, Maggie helped the Chicago House Of Blues to develop their Blues Schoolhouse student outreach program. Maggie is captivating in her presentation, and she effortlessly delivers a powerful performance whether singing spirituals, jazz, contemporary hip-hop or even rapping. She has her own record label Mag/Pie Records.

Corey Wilkes studied at the Berklee College of Music and has toured in Europe, South America and Africa. Howard Reich has called him "one of the boldest, most versatile young trumpeters in Chicago jazz." Corey is an Artist in Residence and Board Member with the Jazz Institute of Chicago and a member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. He has worked with DJ Logic, Osunlade, Josh Deep, and Kahil El Zabar's Ascension Loft Series.

Jimmy Ellis has worked with such notables as Nat "King" Cole, Earl "Fatha" Hines, Sun Ra, Sammy Davis Jr., Sarah Vaughn, King Kolax Band, Jimmy Dorsey, Pearl Bailey, the Duke Ellington Orchestra, and Louie Bellson. From 1986 to 1991 Jimmy served on the Board of Directors of the Jazz Institute of Chicago as co-leader of the Jazz Express Band which presented concerts in Chicago High Schools imparting to the students the history of Jazz Music. During these concerts performers such as Dizzy Gillespie, Wynton Marsalis and Stanley Turrentine participated in the program.

Derek Henderson is a professional drummer who is skilled in Jazz, Funk, Rock, Pop, R&B, Blues, Gospel, Calypso and Reggae music. He has toured in China, Korea and Japan, not to mention at almost every venue Chicago. He has appeared on the Jenny Jones show.
