IN MEMORIAM: PRASHANT BHARGAVA JANUARY 12, 1973-MAY 15, 2015

Receiving a commission to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Igor Stravinsky's Rite of Spring. composer, pianist, MacArthur Fellowship (Genius) Award winner, VIJAY IYER, approached his friend and filmmaker, PRASHANT BHARAGAVA to create a film that would suit the music. From this arose RADHE RADHE: RITES OF HOLI, Prashant’s final collaboration with Vijay. Vijay and Prashant were inspired by the centennial of the Stravinsky-Nijinsky Rite of Spring to explore another sort of rite of spring: the Hindu festival of Holi, famous for its revelry of color in celebration of the love between the divine Krishna and Radha. In northern India, Prashant filmed the ravishing images of an eight-day Holi festival held in the city of Mathura (the mythic birthplace of Krishna), later editing the footage with Stravinsky’s music as a structural-spiritual guide. Vijay’s score is the musical complement to Prashant’s visual ballet, drawing at times on the rhythms and Howard Reich has written, “With a score by jazz pianist and MacArthur Fellowship winner Vijay Iyer and direction by noted Chicago filmmaker Prashant Bhargava, ‘Radhe Radhe’ combines stunning documentary footage, lyrically acted sequences and a bracing musical accompaniment performed by the International Contemporary Ensemble, or ICE.” NPR Music describes the film as "One of the most brilliant and exciting commemorations of the 100th anniversary of Igor Stravinsky's Rite of Spring. . . Bhargava has an extraordinary eye for small gestures and visual details—no small thing, given Mathura's overwhelming whirl of brilliant hues and pressing crowds." We invite you to view and hear this “visually and sonically dazzling
