Chicago AfroBeat Project
Saturday, September 23
As practitioners of a “non-traditional” interpretation of afrobeat for 15 years, CHICAGO AFROBEAT PROJECT continually reinvents itself within the genre first pioneered by Fela Kuti. The group was one of the first nationally touring bands to introduce Americans to the sounds of a genre whose elements have now made their way into more diverse and mainstream outlets with the success of artists like the Roots, Janelle Monae, and Vampire Weekend. Their sound weaves the uniqueness of the Chicago music scene with a distinct Western-influenced Nigerian style of music. They have performed with notables such as Fela Kuti’s son Suen Kuti, Bill Kreutzman of the Grateful Dead, Jeff Parker of Tortoise, Paul Wertico, Steve Kimmock, Sugar Blue, Howard Levy, and many others. The band is set to release a new album, titled What Goes Up featuring master afrobeat drummer Tony Allen, this summer.
